Incredible Cairo - Day 1

Simply Incredible! I am speechless...one minute you are in urban sprawl, and the next you are at the foot of the pyramids!

This is the medium-sized Pyramid of Khafre. It still has remnants of its white limestone casing at the top, unlike the Great Pyramid of Khufu.

I just had to get a shot of this guard on the camel, talking on his cell phone (did they have those in ancient Egypt?) and smoking a cigarette. Note the background illustrating the cityscape of Cairo.

Just laying around waiting for another inexperienced tourist needing a ride!

All 3 pyramids: The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaura.

The pyramids were built between 2589 and 2530B.C. Khufu was a pharoah. His great pyramid was 479 ft. high. The medium-sized Pyramid of Khafre was built for his son; and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaura was built for Menkaura, who suceeded Khafre.

The Sphinx has the facial features of Khafre. It is rumored to have been carved from the bedrock about the same time as the great pyramid.

This one's for you Deb! I didn't even have to look for the Hard Rock in Cairo since we had our lunch there. I was pulled from the table to join the wait staff in a stirring rendition of YMCA.

Yvonne insisted this photo be on my blog. We spent the night at the President Hotel in Zamalek, a neighorhood in Cairo. Our shower had excellent water pressure, but our TV didn't work - Yvonne has bad TV karma.

Just as I pulled back the bed covers to climb in for the night, I spotted this pair of underwear on the bed near the pillow. Needless to say, we were so grossed out we demanded another room.

Vanna, AKA Yvonne, shows off our plush suite (with working TV, this time), that we were moved to after the underwear incident. We left the bathroom light on so we wouldn't trip down the steps if we needed to get out of bed during the night.

That camel looked like he was waiting to take you for a ride to the pyramids. Did you go with him?

Can you go into the pyramids or do you just get to look at them from the outside and go *Wow!*

Underwear in the beds. Terrific. Did you have to pay extra?

I think he was content to take a lunch break. I am planning to ride a camel in the Sinai Desert later this month.
We did go into the medium-sized pyramid. It was very claustrophobic, with steep runged steps down, then back up again. There was just enough room for 1 person going in each direction. And the end point was a small empty room where items were stored.
And no, the underwear was not an extra cost, you nut!
